Home security tips for elderly parents living alone

Kind, practical ideas to help elderly parents feel safe at home, from door habits to welfare checks and community patrols.

If you have a parent living on their own, home security sits at the back of your mind whether you talk about it or not. The tricky bit is helping without making them feel watched or old. Here are some gentle, practical ideas that actually work.

Sort the doors first

Most break ins happen through a front or back door. Fit a decent modern lock. Add a chain or a door viewer so they can see who is there before opening up. Remind them, kindly, that it is fine to not answer the door if they do not feel comfortable.

Deal with cold callers

A No Cold Callers sticker on the door is small but effective. Most legitimate visitors will respect it. Anyone who ignores it is telling you something about themselves.

Keep phone habits simple

Programme important numbers into the phone. Yours, another family member, and 999. Scams often target older people over the phone, so agree a simple rule together, if in doubt, hang up and call you back on your normal number.

A key safe done properly

Key safes are useful but only if the code is not written on the door frame. Choose a spot that is not obvious and change the code now and then. Only trusted people get it.

Welfare checks that do not feel intrusive

This is the bit that changes things. A regular welfare check from an SIA licensed officer, once or twice a week, means someone is quietly keeping an eye. They knock, say hello, check everything is well, and go. No fuss. It gives you peace of mind and it gives your parent company without pressure.

Ask about our community patrols

Phoenix Patrol runs welfare checks as part of our residential community plan. Marked vehicle, friendly uniformed officer, a quick chat, a proper check. It is the sort of thing families tell us made the biggest difference.

Want a visible patrol on your street?

Phoenix Patrol is just £10 a month, that is £2.50 a week. SIA licensed officers, marked vehicles, no contract, cancel any time.
